ucat tutoring melbourne

Dr Luke has been providing one-to-one and student-organised tutoring for UMAT /UCAT Tutoring Melbourne in person or online since 2008.

The UCAT is a two-hour computer-based test which assesses a range of abilities identified by universities as important to practicing in the fields of medicine / dentistry / clinical sciences. The test consists of five separately timed subtests which each contain a number of questions in a multiple-choice format. Once started the test cannot be paused for a break but before each subtest there is a timed instruction section.

Verbal Reasoning
The Verbal Reasoning subtest assesses your ability to read and think carefully about information presented in passages and to determine whether specific conclusions can be drawn from information presented. You are not expected to use prior knowledge to answer the questions.

Decision Making
The Decision Making subtest assesses your ability to apply logic to reach a decision or conclusion, evaluate arguments and analyse statistical information.

Quantitative Reasoning
The Quantitative Reasoning subtest assesses your ability to use numerical skills to solve problems. It assumes familiarity with numbers to the standard of a good pass at GCSE. However questions are less to do with numerical facility and more to do with problem solving.

Abstract Reasoning
Abstract Reasoning assesses your ability to identify patterns amongst abstract shapes where irrelevant and distracting material may lead to incorrect conclusions. The test therefore measures your ability to change track, critically evaluate and generate hypotheses and requires you to query judgements as you go along.

Situational Judgement

The situational judgement test (SJT) measures your capacity to understand real world situations and to identify critical factors and appropriate behaviour in dealing with them.

How to achieve a high score in UMAT/UCAT?

Although ACER believes that training for UCAT is not necessary, specialised preparation helps students to be familiar with the types of questions, develop effective strategies to solve the questions under the test conditions, build students’ confidence for the testing day.

I have followed and tutored the UMAT/UCAT since 2008 in Melbourne. I am familiar with the styles of questions and skills tested. Based on expertise in biological research, I have developed a set of effective strategies to solve UMAT/UCAT questions, especially those on logical reasoning & problem solving and non-verbal reasoning. These questions test student’s ability in scientific reasoning, such as deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning.

Students find my strategies very effective, especially in continuing the series, picking the middle, completing the picture, logical reasoning. Quite a few students got 90% above. One of my UMAT students got an average percentile of 99% in UMAT.
