Chemistry

Dr Luke works as a chemistry tutor Melbourne for high school and University students and provides  one-to-one tutoring, group tutoring, student-organised group tutoring or online tutoring since 1997.

Group tutoring is scheduled on weekends at the State Library of Victoria and aimed to link key knowledge and key skills required to the exam questions.

VCE Chemistry 3&4

Time: 11:10 am to 12:10 pm on Saturdays

IB Chemistry SL/HL
Time: 11:10 am to 12:10 pm on Sundays

During the hour of group tutoring,
– Briefly review the key knowledges stipulated by the study design (2016 to 2020)
– Analyse questions from the previous end year exams
– Show the techniques and skills to address the questions
– Give you opportunity to solve some previous year exam questions

The tutoring runs from March to October each year. Please indicate the date, time and subject when you are planning to attend. The maximum number of students per class is 5. You will surely benefit most by attending the tutoring regularly. You only need to pay $50 after each lesson or $230 for five lessons.

Chemistry Development

Chemistry is not only a prerequisite for many courses in higher education, such as medicine, biological science and environmental science. It is an amazing subject as it around us all the time. When you wait up in the morning, you say it is a lovely day. Lots of chemical reactions are occurring in your body. Even, “Falling in love” apparently causes changes in the chemistry of the brain; chemicals are produced that give that “high” associated with a new relationship.

Chemistry is an experimental science that combines academic study with the acquisition of practical and investigational skills. It is often called the central science, as chemical principles underpin both the physical environment in which we live and all biological systems.

I works as one of best chemistry tutors Melbourne for VCE chemistry, IB chemistry SL, IB chemistry HL, university physical chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry.

VCE chemistry consists of five broad areas (Chemistry Study Design, 2016 -2021):

  • What are the options for energy production? – obtaining energy fro fuels, fuel choices, galvanic cells as a source of energy, and fuel cells as a source of energy
  • How can the yield of a chemical product be optimised? – rate of chemical reactions, extent of chemical reactions, production of chemicals by electrolysis, reachargeable batteries
  • How can the diversity of carbon compounds be explained and categorised? – Structure and nomenclature of organic compounds, Categories, properties and reactions of organic compounds, Analysis of organic compounds
  • What is the chemistry of food? – Key food molecules, Metabolism of food in the human body, Energy content of food.
  • Practical investigation

IB chemistry consists of the following 11 core areas (IB Diploma Programme Chemistry Guide, First Assessment 2016):

  • Topic 1: Stoichiometric relationships
  • Topic 2: Atomic structure
  • Topic 3: Periodicity
  • Topic 4: Chemical bonding and structure
  • Topic 5: Energetics/thermochemistry
  • Topic 6: Chemical kinetics
  • Topic 7: Equilibrium
  • Topic 8: Acids and bases
  • Topic 9: Redox processes
  • Topic 10: Organic chemistry
  • Topic 11: Measurement and data processing

For the university chemistry, I mainly use the following three textbooks as references.

Zumdahl, S. S. & Zumdahl S. A. 2007, Chemistry, 7th ed, Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston

McMurry, J. 2008, Organic chemistry, 8th ed, Thomson-Brooks/Cole

Nelson, D. L. Lehninger, A.L. and Cox, M. M. 2008, Principles of Biochemistry, W. H. Freeman,
